FAQ's

Educational qualification: Candidates must have completed a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification, or be in the final year of their undergraduate program.

Subject requirement: There is no restriction on the undergraduate discipline for appearing in the Biotechnology (BT) paper. However, the admission requirements vary among the admitting institutes and academic programmes.

Minimum marks: There is no minimum percentage or CGPA requirement for appearing in the IIT JAM examination. Candidates are only required to have passed their qualifying degree examination. However, admission is subject to the eligibility criteria specified by the admitting institute.

No. There is no age limit for appearing in the IIT JAM examination.

The examination is conducted as a CBT and consists of three types of questions:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
  • Multiple Select Questions (MSQs)
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

No. Qualifying IIT JAM does not guarantee admission. Admission depends on the candidate's rank, seat availability, and fulfilment of the eligibility criteria specified by the admitting institute.

JAM BT scores are accepted by several IITs, IISc, and various participating institutes for admission to postgraduate programmes in Biotechnology and related disciplines.

The exam is a 3-hour, online Computer-Based Test (CBT) consisting of 60 questions worth a total of 100 marks. The paper is strictly in English and is divided into three sections:

Section A – MCQs: This section consists of 30 questions. Negative marking is applicable: 1/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer to a 1-mark question, and 2/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer to a 2-mark question.

Section B – MCQs: This section contains 10 questions, with 2 marks allotted to each question. There is no negative marking in this section.

Section C – MCQs: This section consists of 20 questions. There is no negative marking for Numerical Answer Type questions

Although IIT-JAM Biotechnology paper includes Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, the examination is heavily dominated by Biology and Biotechnology.

  • Biology (~70%))
  • Chemistry (~10% – 20%)
  • IIT-JAM (Biotechnology)
  • Mathematics (~5% – 10%)
  • Physics (~5% – 10%)

Students do not require a large number of books. A few standard textbooks combined with extensive question practice are generally sufficient.

  • Lehninger’s Principles of Biochemistry
  • Bruce Alberts’ Molecular Biology of the Cell
  • Watson’s Molecular Biology of the Gene
  • Kuby Immunology
  • Pathfinder’s Life Sciences: Fundamentals and Practice (Part I and II)
  • Pathfinder’s Biophysics and Molecular Biology: Tools and Techniques
  • NCERT Biology (Class XI and XII)
  • Pathfinder’s TEST PREP Question Bank for IIT-JAM, CUET-PG, and GAT-B: For Practice questions and PYQs.
  • Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry: Standard class XI and XII books are sufficient for covering the syllabus.

Based on an analysis of the previous 10 years of IIT JAM Biotechnology question papers and recent examination trends, the following topics have consistently carried the highest weightage. While the exact number of questions may vary from year to year, these topics repeatedly account for a significant proportion of the examination and should be considered high-priority areas for preparation.

  • Biomolecules: Amino acids and proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids (structure and metabolism)
  • Enzymes and Vitamins
  • Cellular respiration: Glycolysis, fermentation, TCA cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, HMP pathway, and gluconeogenesis
  • Cell biology: Plasma membrane structure and transport, Protein trafficking, Cytoskeleton
  • Electrical properties of membranes
  • Cell cycle and Apoptosis
  • Cell signaling
  • Cancer biology
  • Molecular biology: DNA replication, transcription and RNA processing, gene regulation, epigenetics, chromatin remodeling, RNA interference (RNAi), protein synthesis, and DNA repair
  • Transposable elements
  • Immunology: Antibody structure and functions, MHC, B-cell and T-cell development, activation and regulation, complement system, and vaccines and immunization
  • Classical cenetics: Mendelian genetics, gene interactions (epistasis), pedigree analysis, linkage and recombination, gene mapping, complementation test, and genetic dissection
  • Bacteria and Viruses
  • Mutation and Cytogenetics: Structural and numerical chromosomal alterations
  • Plant physiology: Photosynthesis (C3, C4, and CAM pathways), photorespiration, plant hormones (biosynthesis, transport, mechanism of action, and physiological effects), nitrogen fixation,
  • Animal physiology: Nervous system, endocrinology, kidney physiology, cardiovascular physiology, and respiratory physiology
  • Ecology: Energy flow in ecosystems, population growth models and diversity indices, life-history strategies (r- and K-selection), species interactions, and ecological succession
  • Evolution: Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, natural selection, and speciation
  • Biotechnology: Recombinant DNA technology, cloning vectors, transgenic plants and animals, and molecular markers
  • Biophysical and Molecular biology techniques: Microscopy, chromatography, electrophoresis, spectroscopy, flow cytometry, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), DNA sequencing, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)
