State Eligibility Test (SET)

The State Eligibility Test (SET) is a state-level examination conducted in different domains such as Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Botany, and Zoology to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for the position of Assistant Professor in state-run universities and colleges. While many states accept the CSIR-UGC-NET, several states also conduct their own SET examinations to address regional language preferences and local academic requirements. Although the CSIR-UGC-NET is valid across India, the SET is valid only within the state conducting the examination.

Common strategy for preparation of SET

A focused and syllabus-oriented preparation strategy is essential for success in the SET in Life Sciences and allied subjects. Aspirants should select books that comprehensively cover the core areas of the SET syllabus while strengthening both conceptual understanding and MCQ-based problem-solving skills. The following books serve as valuable resources for systematic and examination-oriented preparation:

  • Life Sciences – Fundamentals and Practice – Part I and II
  • MCQs: Life Sciences and Biotechnology
  • Tools and Techniques of Biophysics and Molecular Biology
  • General Aptitude: Theory and Practice

In addition to books, recorded lecture videos for CSIR-UGC NET Life Sciences preparation can be highly beneficial. Such lectures provide structured topic-wise learning, conceptual clarity and visual explanations of complex topics.
